Fighting for Representation: Our Response to the Removal of Trans Literature in Kent Libraries

At Swale Pride, we exist to uplift, represent, and support the LGBTQIA+ community in Swale and beyond. That’s why the recent actions taken by Kent County Council – under the influence of Reform UK councillors have left many of us hurt, angry, and deeply concerned.

This week, reports confirmed that Kent libraries have removed trans-focused literature from display, following pressure from Reform UK representatives. One of the books affected is The Autistic Trans Guide to Life, an important resource for trans and neurodivergent individuals navigating their identity in a world that too often leaves them behind.

Let’s be absolutely clear: this is censorship, and it’s a targeted attack on the trans and neurodivergent communities.

Books like this aren’t dangerous. What’s dangerous is erasing our stories and silencing voices that already struggle to be heard. Visibility saves lives especially for young people. When you remove that visibility, you contribute to a culture of shame and fear.

Here’s what our founder, Steven Pullen, had to say:

“This move by KCC leader Linden Kemkaran and cabinet member Cllr Paul Webb isn’t about protecting children – it’s about pushing an agenda that sidelines and stigmatises trans people. The Autistic Trans Guide to Life wasn’t in a children's section. It was simply part of a Pride display, celebrating inclusion and diversity. Removing it sends a loud and ugly message: that our stories, our experiences, and our existence are too controversial to be seen. That’s not just wrong it’s harmful. And it’s something we refuse to stay silent about. Swale Pride stands firmly with our trans and neurodivergent community. Always.”

This is not an isolated incident. It’s part of a worrying pattern of anti-LGBTQIA+ rhetoric gaining ground in parts of the UK, particularly from Reform UK politicians. From attacks on inclusive education to undermining Pride events, it’s becoming clearer than ever: we must stay loud, visible, and united.

We urge Kent County Council to reverse this harmful decision and to ensure that public spaces remain inclusive for everyone.

We also call on our allies councillors, community leaders, parents, educators, and residents to speak up. Representation matters. Safe spaces matter. Let’s not allow censorship to become the norm.
